How many different types of IVT would meet the needs of the different segments of the automotive market?

The IVT is likely to be segmented in a similar way to current automatic transmissions.

The key criteria for a transmission when segmenting the automotive market relate to the layout of the vehicle and it's power capacity. Vehicle layouts can be rear-wheel drive (RWD), front-wheel drive (FWD) and four or all-wheel drive (AWD). The layout is also affected by the position of the engine (eg transverse) so further segmentation is possible. Current automatic transmission families' tend to be dependent on the layout and the power requirements of a vehicle, for example 'under 400Nm' or 'up to 700Nm' of torque. IVTs are likely to be segmented in a similar way.
