Guide to the automotive market

The largest sector in the automotive market is passenger cars. Approximately 60 million cars were produced globally in 2004. The current global split by different transmission types can be seen in the pie chart below. The electric slice refers to the very small proportion of cars currently produced with an electric drive, approximately 2,000 were produced in 2004.

The majority of car transmissions are manufactured by the car companies. However, a significant proportion of the world’s automatic transmission production is carried out by three large tier 1 suppliers:

  • Aisin AW
  • Jatco
  • ZF
