Torotrak's principal commercial strategy is to generate royalty income from high-volume manufacture of IVT technology by our licensed customers.
In addition, consultancy income is earned from providing expertise to vehicle and transmission manufacturers in the development of IVTs for their specific applications.
Torotrak is currently targeting the following markets, each of which is supported by an individual business strategy:
Automotive
Torotrak’s strategy is to generate royalty income from volume manufacture of the Torotrak IVT by both Tier 1 suppliers to the automotive industry and vehicle manufacturers directly. It is common practice in the automotive industry for vehicle manufacturers to pass the responsibility for the development of new technology to their closest tier 1 suppliers.
Torotrak has recognised this by building relationships with car companies as well as with tier 1 suppliers such as Aisin AW, Koyo Seiko, Shell and Getrag, global suppliers of the key components of the IVT.
Outdoor Power Equipment (OPE) market
With the formation of Infinitrak, a joint venture company between Torotrak and MTD Holdings, Torotrak is able to offer Infinitely Variable Transmissions (IVT) for vehicles in the OPE market in the 5 to 45kW range.
Initially, Infinitrak will supply products exclusively to MTD Products Inc for incorporation in vehicles and products it manufactures and distributes.
Off-highway market
Torotrak is targeting the global off-highway market where there is a large demand for Infinitely Variable Transmissions, currently met by hydrostatic drives. The full toroidal IVT can provide the same features at a lower cost with additional benefits.
Torotrak is working with several major vehicle and transmission manufacturers in this sector developing the IVT for agricultural and construction vehicles.
Other applications
The IVT technology is applicable to a wide range of applications. A systematic approach is taken in evaluating and exploiting these markets. This includes working closely with the major players in each of these markets to develop the IVT for their applications.
