Benefits for automotive

Fuel economy

The IVT provides a double figure percentage improvement in vehicle fuel economy. The technology is currently being demonstrated in a Ford Expedition with a 5.4 litre engine. Externally verified tests show a fuel economy improvement of 20% compared to the existing 4-speed automatic. Computer modelling comparing the IVT to 6-speed automatics predicts a greater than 10% improvement in fuel economy.

Reduced emissions

With the complete powertrain control offered by the IVT, significant emission reductions can be made by running the engine under optimum conditions. Torotrak’s Ford Expedition demonstrator fitted with an IVT produces the same emissions levels as the standard vehicle, without the need for any additional emissions reduction add-ons such as Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR).

Geared Neutral feature - no starting device

The IVT has a feature termed 'geared neutral' where, in normal driving conditions, the engine is connected to the road wheels whilst the vehicle is stationary. This feature eliminates the need for an inefficient starting device such as a torque converter.

Applicable to hybrid electric vehicles

The Torotrak IVT is fully compatible with hybrid electric systems, for more information click here.
