Variable Drive Supercharger Testing Progresses

Leyland, 18 January 2011 – Testing work on the Rotrak variable drive supercharger is underway in Torotrak’s rolling-road test facility. The company’s engineers already have the technology running in a B-segment donor vehicle on a dynamometer and are calibrating the control strategy to prove its driveability, performance, CO₂ and fuel economy benefits.

Flybus to start testing first flywheel hybrid bus

Completed prototype system appears at Low Carbon Vehicle exhibition

6 September 2011 The Flybus consortium has reached a significant milestone with the

successful integration of prototype hardware into an Optare Solo Midibus. The Flybus system,

which should cost significantly less than current electric hybrids, uses a Ricardo Kinergy

flywheel as the energy storage medium and a Torotrak continuously variable transmission

(CVT) as the means of transferring energy between the wheels and the flywheel. The entire

installation is mounted on the existing transmission‟s Power Take Off facility

The Flybus consortium led by traction drive specialist Torotrak plc (FTSE: TRK.L) has been announced as a winner of this year’s Low Carbon Vehicle Partnership Technology Challenge. The Challenge this year identified technologies that can reduce the carbon footprint of heavy goods vehicles such as trucks and buses. The consortium is developing a low-cost, easily installed, flywheel hybrid system that reduces CO2 emission by around 20 percent during urban stop-start operation.

Construction of low-cost, high-efficiency hybrid “Flybus”demonstrator begins 29 October 2010 A project to demonstrate the viability of a cost-effective alternative to battery-hybrid buses has taken a step closer to fruition with construction starting of the first prototype vehicle. For a fraction of the cost of other systems, the “Flybus” system could deliver up to 20 percent savings in fuel consumption and CO2 emissions in stop-start city centre operation. The project is due to publish the results of testing next year.

Torotrak’s Technology Director, Chris Greenwood, retired on September 30th after 32 years in the transmission business. A founding father of Torotrak’s full-toroidal traction drive technology, Chris was involved at the very start of its development when, in 1978 and whilst employed by Leyland Vehicles, he undertook research and development into traction drives for application to trucks and buses.
