FHSPV Flywheel Hybrid Project – System Testing Complete

The UK’s Flywheel Hybrid System for Premium Vehicles (FHSPV) project team is pleased to report that full system rig-testing is now complete.

The FHSPV project is a collaboration between Jaguar Cars, Ford Motor Company, Flybrid Systems, Torotrak, Xtrac, Prodrive and Ricardo. Together they are developing a high-speed flywheel-based hybrid system for demonstration in a Jaguar XF vehicle. The project is part-funded by the UK’s Technology Strategy Board.

The system comprises a Flybrid Systems’ flywheel linked to the powertrain by a continuously variable transmission (CVT) based on Torotrak’s technology, designed and manufactured by Xtrac. It has been testing on Flybrid’s full load test rig that features an electric drive system capable of storing and recovering up to 200kW (268bhp) of power.

System testing has focused on perfecting functionality in the New European Drive Cycle (NEDC), the standard test for fuel economy and CO2 emissions. Testing has included all the system’s available operation modes: recovering energy during braking; charging direct from the engine; releasing the energy during acceleration; launching and driving the car with the engine off.

The system has been successfully tested, producing efficiencies in line with expectations.
