From November 2nd to 4th 2010, the Flybus mechanical hybrid system was displayed for the first time at the Euro Bus Expo at the NEC, Birmingham. Developed by consortium partners Torotrak, Ricardo and Optare, with support from Allison Transmission Inc., the display generated considerable interest from local authorities, fleet operators, bus manufacturers and the trade press.
Situated on the Optare stand, the display consisted of Torotrak’s variable drive hardware and a model of the flywheel developed by Ricardo. The display was supported by an animation of how the mechanical hybrid system works.
Visitors learnt how the Flybus system can be installed line-side in newly built vehicles and how it is also possible to convert existing fleets without reducing passenger capacity, due to the hybrid’s compact size and compatability with the existing driveline.
Commenting on the show Chris Brockbank, Business Director of lead partner Torotrak said: “The Euro Bus Expo provides a very effective platform for us to reach our key target audience for the Flybus system and to demonstrate
that there is a compelling alternative to battery-electric and other hybrid
