David Jamieson MP, Transport Minister with special responsibility for cleaner vehicles, drove a vehicle fitted with a technology that can go a long way to meet the Government's target to cut UK CO2 emissions by 20 per cent by 2010.
The Ford Expedition, tested by the Minister on the MIRA test track, Nuneaton, is fitted with Torotrak’s Infinitely Variable Transmission (IVT) which enables the engine to run at optimum conditions for fuel economy resulting in a 20 % reduction in fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. This is achieved without any compromises in performance; in fact the IVT delivers a very refined driving experience.
“It is good to be here at the forefront of British technology and understanding how efficiency can be realised without compromising on power, ” noted Mr. Jamieson.
In addition the Minister experienced the innovative driving features afforded by the IVT on the test hills at MIRA. Total Off Road Control (TORC™) delivers a controlled descent on steep gradients and can be set to prevent the vehicle from rolling backwards when moving from rest on a steep hill. David Jamieson MP, Transport Minister, concluded: “The innovative ideas I have seen today will soon be in everyday use and that is very exciting. It is clear that car development and manufacturing is being taken to a new level and it is great to see British companies in a leading role.”
